LOGAN, Utah, May 30, 2024 — The Shingo Institute, a program of the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University, has awarded Noel Hennessey and John Bicheno the Shingo Publication Award for their book Human Lean.
Human Lean provides a comprehensive overview of the human aspects essential for successful Lean transformations. It covers concepts from operations management, psychology, systems thinking, and change management drawn from over 150 authorities.
"Receipt of the Shingo Publication Award signifies an author's significant contribution and practical application to the body of knowledge regarding organizational excellence," says Ken Snyder, executive director of the Shingo Institute.
"It has taken a long time for us in the West to become more aware of the human side of Lean. TWI JR, Kata, Hancho, Nemawashi, etc., have slowly made us understand that Lean is more than just process optimization. However, how this all fits together with classical and the latest models and findings from organizational theory, psychology, and other human-centered sciences has never been described in depth. John Bicheno and Noel Hennessey have now finally shed light on this dark spot. Human Lean explains a lot of things that we may have guessed at but have mostly had to fish in the dark. The book impresses with its diversity of perspectives and, above all, with the mutual integration of well-known methods and principles from Lean into the human sciences and, conversely, with the integration of exciting human-centered personality and leadership approaches into the Lean world. After reading Human Lean, you will know which book the Lean world has been missing until now." remarks Christian M. Thurnes, Professor for Logistics, Production, and Innovation Management at the Centre of Competence in Hochschule Kaiserslautern, Germany
Frank Devine, Author of Rapid Mass Engagement, applauds, "I love teaching part-time master programs because the students are practitioners; they all have experience, hold responsible jobs, and are good at detecting non-value added material! That is why Human Lean is among the first books I put on reading lists. Human Lean is ideal for busy people. It is concise yet comprehensive, covers a broad range of topics across multiple disciplines, and entices readers to think deeply about both theories and practices. The Shingo assessors have judged well."
"This book comprehensively covers the key elements of contemporary Lean thinking and practice and provides plain-speaking, accessible, and sense-making summaries of value for both experienced practitioners and those new to Lean. It is recommended reading on our Lean Enterprise & Operational Excellence Programme Portfolio at South East Technological University (SETU)." praises Darrin Taylor, Academy of Lean Enterprise, South East Technological University.
Hennessey and Bicheno will receive the award at the Shingo European Conference awards gala on October 16, 2024, in Manchester, UK. The Shingo European Conference features workshops, site tours, keynotes, and breakouts to provide organizations with insights into achieving operational excellence.
