COVID-19 – Jaguar Land Rover Lends Community Support
by Ken Snyder
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is one of the largest private-sector employers in the UK, and as such, JLR has a huge impact on the UK economy. We are also pleased with the partnership between JLR and the Shingo Institute and our affiliates. JLR has hosted site visits and sent hundreds of employees to Shingo training workshops. Nigel Blenkinsop, the director of quality, serves as a member of the Shingo Executive Advisory Board.
The COVID-19 pandemic has hammered the auto industry. Sales have dropped as much as 90 percent in some locations, and by more than 25 percent worldwide. Many car plants are shuttered, including several JLR plants. It would be easy to sit back and do nothing.
But that is not what JLR has done. Let me briefly report three of JLR’s many actions during this time of crisis:
1) JLR has started a production line using its 3D printers to produce visors for healthcare workers in the UK;
2) JLR has provided more than 300 vehicles to the Red Cross in several countries across Europe; and
3) JLR employees have raised money for two different organizations: the NSPCC, a UK children’s charity, and the UK National Health Service (NHS).
It is wonderful to see many organizations, such as JLR, recognize that there is a higher purpose in a time of crisis and to rally around that purpose to support the community as a whole.
