Innovations in Healthcare Management demonstrates that, as developed economies enter a period of slower growth, emerging economies such as India have become prime examples of how more can be achieved with less. The book explores recent innovations in healthcare from a global and Indian perspective. It presents new concepts, methods, and tools for low cost, high solutions that improve access to care. Singh and Lillrank describe how to organize resources and flow so that given targets can be achieved with available resources. The book also covers non-traditional ecosystems of innovation outside of pure technology, such as social persuasions, rural health delivery, exploitation of economies of scale, prevention-oriented primary care, medical education, and hospital design. After reading Innovations in Healthcare Management, readers will possess the understanding required to implement new ideas and new models of delivery of affordable care in healthcare systems around the world.

Richard Hayward, Course Leader at MSc HealthCare Management, says, “This is a timely and well-considered book. … The book explores Western management philosophies, in particular the Lean approach to management, and applies them to developing countries with a significant focus on the Indian subcontinent. The global approach taken by this book to the substantial challenges faced by nations throughout the world identifies the commonalities and differences in the solutions and implementation of global healthcare and the major role that leadership plays in both the identification and the application of healthcare policy, appropriate to the environment in which they are delivered. … I would recommend it to all those with an interest in the global health economy.”

David Wittenberg, CEO of The Innovation Workgroup in India, says, “This book is eminently practical. Readers will find much to imitate in the numerous and varied case studies. I hope that many will also be inspired by the successes of others to create their own innovations.”

V K Singh and Paul Lillrank will receive their award at the awards ceremony during the Shingo Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA on April 28–May 3, 2019. The conference is a week-long event featuring a selection of workshops, plant tours, keynote speakers, and breakout sessions designed to provide ongoing knowledge, insights, and experience for organizations in pursuit of operational excellence.
