Total Productive Maintenance: A Foundation of Operational Excellence by Peter Willmott, John Quirke, and Andy Brunskill Receives Shingo Publication Award

Summary: After trained examiners and accomplished business professionals performed a thorough assessment of their work, Peter Willmott, John Quirke, and Andy Brunskill have been selected as recipients of an internationally recognized award from the Shingo Institute, a program in the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business. The authors will receive the award at the 34th Annual Shingo Conference in Orlando, Florida, on May 19, 2022.

LOGAN, Utah — The Shingo Institute, a program in the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University, has awarded Peter Willmott, John Quirke, and Andy Brunskill with the Shingo Publication Award for their book, TPM: A Foundation of Operational Excellence.

“Receipt of the Shingo Publication Award signifies an author’s significant contribution and practical application to the body of knowledge regarding enterprise excellence,” said Ken Snyder, executive director of the Shingo Institute.

The book is aimed at three target areas within a particular business enterprise. These areas are the continuous improvement and engineering specialists, the business leadership team, and the practitioners. When engaged, these target areas use the TPM system as the bottom-up enabling tool to help deliver the company’s business drivers, vision, values, and culture.

Bob Kerr, retired VP of High Performance Solutions (AMEUSA), said, “In reviewing the book, I felt overwhelmed by the amount of information that was included in the pages. But then I started looking at it from the perspective of a road map as to how this could work if my company had a culture that was up to the challenge of improving the organization. This book not only highlights the steps to implement TPM but demonstrates the need for a solid cultural foundation. It is a book that, no matter what continuous improvement program an organization is trying to initiate, gives a clear path to what is needed from a people perspective. There is a wealth of knowledge captured in these pages, from case studies to charts and graphs, from the right metrics to be used to audit sheets, from assessments to leadership habits. It is a book that I certainly would recommend.”

Neil Enright, Components Manufacturing Manager at Molex Shannon, said, “The book is a fantastic read and simplifies the TPM process end to end. It’s a reminder to all that the foundation for any process improvement has to have asset care at its core plus the people leadership development to sustain the gains long term.”

The book’s authors will receive their award at the Awards Gala during the Shingo Conference in Orlando, Florida, USA on May 19-20, 2022. The conference is a two-day hybrid event featuring keynote speakers and interactive breakout sessions designed to provide ongoing knowledge, insights, and experience for organizations in pursuit of operational excellence. Attendees will also have the option to add pre-conference workshops to their agenda.
