AccuRounds is a manufacturer of precision-machined parts located in Avon, Massachusetts USA. It is a second-generation, family-owned company. Having adopted Lean principles about 25 years ago, AccuRounds is a long way down the Lean road. The organization received a Shingo Prize Northeast Region Silver Medallion in 2006, and it just keeps improving.
Because AccuRounds makes parts that go into machines for vaccine production and pharmaceutical testing, they are deemed essential, and have been growing throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the product mix has gone through some huge changes. Some parts have been temporarily discontinued and other parts have seen skyrocketing demand.
I recently had a chance to talk with the owner and CEO of AccuRounds, Michael Tamasi. Mr. Tamasi gave an example of the wrenching changes his company has had to adapt to. AccuRounds builds a part that goes into the equipment to produce vaccines. He explained, “It is one of the most complicated parts we make. Our customer pulled in delivery times and we had to ramp up production. I don’t think we could have done it if we weren’t a Lean company. Our culture, good communication, and our alignment around our purpose and values have all combined to help us react quickly to this surge in demand.”
