Leadership, Lean, and COVID-19

by Ken Snyder

I was happy to read an open letter from Karl Wadensten, the CEO of VIBCO, that was posted to LinkedIn a few days ago. VIBCO is a long-time practitioner of Lean and has hosted many Shingo workshops over the years. In fact, VIBCO is hosting a Shingo DISCOVER EXCELLENCE virtual workshop on April 21-22.

VIBCO manufactures many types of industrial vibrators—vibrators to empty rail cars, vibrators to shake bubbles out of concrete, etc. Right now, most importantly, VIBCO is an essential supplier to the pharma and food companies. As such, they are deemed essential. VIBCO is a small, second generation, family-owned company.

Two highlights from Karl’s open letter struck home:
1) VIBCO’s commitment to Lean helps them be more responsive to rapidly changing circumstances.
2) If VIBCO allows themselves to be sloppy, then their customers can’t count on them as they work to feed families or develop a cure for the virus.

In his letter, Karl explains how VIBCO is keeping team members safe, ensuring the safety of their products, and keeping their delivery schedules!
