LOGAN, Utah — The Shingo Institute, a program of the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University, has awarded Michael Martyn the Shingo Publication Award for his book, Management for Omotenashi: Learning to Lead for Purpose, Passion, and Performance.
“Receipt of the Shingo Publication Award signifies an author’s significant contribution and practical application to the body of knowledge regarding organizational excellence,” says Ken Snyder, executive director of the Shingo Institute.
Management for Omotenashi: Learning to Lead for Purpose, Passion, and Performance provides a model for leaders to truly engage their people while delivering business results. The model teaches leaders how to adopt a leadership philosophy that places people before profit and embraces the role of creating the opportunity for “ikigai” through work. Next, it helps leaders design a daily management system that aligns people through strategy, encourages growth through challenge, and engages leaders as coaches. Finally, leaders learn to commit to a kaizen environment where each person strives to improve the organization every day and takes pride in their accomplishments.
Gary Peterson, Executive Vice President of Supply Chain & Production at O.C. Tanner Company, said, “This book is a must read because helping people find meaning and purpose in their work is the biggest leadership challenge we face. I know this book will help create more powerful and effective leaders and associates, and in doing so, will transform the work we do each day into something that is more meaningful, enabling, and inspiring.”
“Martyn has delivered with this thoughtful yet practical collection of leadership insights, case studies, and examples,” said Mike Hoseus, former Toyota Motor Manufacturing leader and co-author of Shingo Publication Award–recipient of Toyota Culture: The Heart and Soul of the Toyota Way. “Management for Omotenashi is a must read for leaders at any level who want to go beyond management and servant leadership. It will help leaders who want to intentionally create a purposeful culture of passionate employees, who take pride in their work, and who engage in improvement daily to deliver the performance and long term, sustainable results that organizations need.”
Kiyoshi Suzaki, author of The New Shop Floor Management: Empowering People for Continuous Improvement and Results from the Heart: How to Instill Commitment from Your Employees by Helping Them to Full Develop Their Talents, said, “I found the approach in Management for Omotenashi and the leadership model profound and refreshing. Once I started reading the book, I could not put it down. My hope is that you can make his approach a part of your in work and also a part of your life so that your team, your family, and your community can have a deeper appreciation for what you can do. I am confident this book will bring out the potential that every leader has and will contribute to everyone in the organization helping each other overcome challenges, solve problems. and improve performance.”
