LOGAN, Utah, October 1, 2024 — The Shingo Institute, a program of the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University, has awarded Dennis R. Delisle the Shingo Publication Award for his book Lean Healthcare: A Practical Guide for Executing Lean Improvements with Real-World Case Studies, Second Edition.

Lean Healthcare provides a practical guide to implementing Lean thinking in healthcare, focusing on real-world case studies and tools to facilitate rapid improvements. The second edition also includes a bonus section on pandemic preparedness, offering additional insights and strategies for healthcare organizations striving for continuous improvement.

"Receipt of the Shingo Publication Award signifies an author's significant contribution and practical application to the body of knowledge regarding organizational excellence," says Ken Snyder, executive director of the Shingo Institute.

David Nash, MD, MBA, Founding Dean Emeritus at Jefferson College Population Health, praises the book, saying, "Few voices have been as consistent and powerful about implementing the tenets of Lean thinking in our industry than Dennis Delisle. His latest work is a tour de force and now he stands alone as the voice we all need to listen to carefully."

Mary Reich Cooper, MD, JD, Associate Professor at Jefferson College of Population Health, adds, "Dennis Delisle has written a comprehensive book that talks not only about the theory, but shows you how to put it into practice. Which, he does, every day, in hospital operations."

Ronald R. O'Donnell, Ph.D., Clinical Professor at Arizona State University, notes, "I’ve used this textbook in my doctoral behavioral health degree program quality improvement course for graduate students from clinical and management backgrounds. The clear overview of Lean, detailed instructions on executing improvements, real-world examples, and an online appendix of Lean tools makes this a favorite for students."

Tracy Owens, CQE, Associate Professor at The Ohio State University, adds, "As an educator, I have found Lean Healthcare by Dennis Delisle to be an invaluable resource in my instructional practice. This book not only provides comprehensive insights into the deployment of Lean tools in healthcare but also offers practical strategies that enhance management and leadership."

Dennis Delisle will be recognized at the 37th Annual Shingo Conference awards gala on April 29, in Provo, Utah. The Annual Shingo Conference features workshops, site tours, keynotes, and breakouts to provide organizations with insights into achieving operational excellence.
